Theory of Mind

Notes

Claim

In psychology, theory of mind refers to the capacity to understand other people by ascribing mental states to them—that is, assuming what is happening in their mind.

Explanation

This includes the knowledge that others' beliefs, desires, intentions, emotions, and thoughts may be different from one's own. Subjective perception filters how we see external reality

A theory of mind is a theory because we can't read others' minds. We can only assume what is happening in other people's minds based on their actions and appearance Signaling is displaying qualities to appear worthy or successful Behavior reveals true preferences. We don't have access to internal thoughts, feelings or sensations others experience. It is a question whether such a thing is possible without directly being that person Subjective experience resists scientific explanation, because maybe even asking or exploring his mind biologically is not enough. Some experiences are perhaps untranslatable Some knowledge requires direct experience to fully understand.

Not only do we not have access to the other's mind; we are also "interrupted" by our own. It is very hard for us to avoid the Once learned, knowledge makes it impossible to imagine its absence, escape how we see the world, and put ourselves in someone else's mind. We mistakenly assume that we are the same, ignoring the vast Diversity of perspectives strengthens decision-making and understanding in ways of thinking.

Why it matters

How do we form an understanding between people? The most direct solution is language. Although each of us is different, it seems that we can agree on rules and structure to facilitate meaning between us using words, although even language has its limitations Word meaning varies with history and social context.

Perhaps language is too rational and rigid a solution. Perhaps true understanding can only come from a sense of Empathy means understanding and acting on another's perspective, generated during a moment of connection, facilitated by Body language conveys meaning as powerfully as words more than words.
