It is very hard to improve when you never try to put theory into practice Active engagement with material accelerates learning. Tips for useful experimentation:

Be open minded - Testing should be approached with a sense of Curiosity is the joy of filling knowledge gaps, and with a Openness to new ideas without expert bias, we don't know what the results might be, and we need to be open to accepting them regardless.
