By starting with a sampling period, where you try out different fields and then specialize, you will increase your chances of a better Matching between your desires, your skills and your expertise, instead of committing too early to a specific field, creating Path Dependence for yourself.

Similarly, early overspecialization can lead to worse results even in your own field. Since you committed early to one field, it's likely that:

  1. short over long term tradeoff - you traded Lifelong Learning for "quick wins", which means that you won't be as open or able to learn new things that will improve your performance, while forgetting things that are crucial to it. Since everyone is getting better, you will lose your Competitive Advantage
  2. one track thinking - If you are only familiar with one topic, most likely that you will see each problem through the same lens Binary Thinking. If economics is your hammer, then everything is a nail that can be solved with incentives and deregulation.
