Philosophy of Language

Notes

Philosophy of language asks what words mean, how they acquire meaning, and what the relationship is between language and thought.

Language and Meaning

Language and Meaning examines how meaning is constructed and transmitted. Words do not have fixed, context-independent meanings — they accumulate historical sense and are defined by their relations to other words. Language is a web, not a dictionary: meaning is relational, dynamic, and shaped by the community of speakers who use it.
